Bargarh: A serious case of alleged negligence has come to light at the Niramaya medicine centre in Bargarh, Odisha, after a 15-year-old boy was reportedly given an expired medicine, following which he fell ill.
According to the family, Mukesh Sahu, a resident of Nilibandha Pada, had suffered a cut on his finger and visited the Bargarh Community Health Centre for treatment. After examining him, the doctor prescribed the antibiotic Cefpodoxime Proxetil, which was collected from the Niramaya medicine counter.
The family alleges that the medicine supplied had expired in May 2026. Soon after taking the medication, Mukesh reportedly developed dizziness and vomiting. On checking the medicine strip, his family found that the expiry date had already passed.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the monitoring and quality control of medicines distributed under the Niramaya scheme and whether expired drugs are being regularly identified and removed from stock.
The family has demanded a detailed investigation into the matter and strict action against those found responsible. As of now, health authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
