Manchester: Indian cricket witnessed a historic moment on Saturday as teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest player ever to represent India in a T20 International. The 15-year-old received his maiden India cap ahead of the second T20I against England in Manchester, marking another milestone in his remarkable rise through the ranks.
At 15 years, 3 months, and 7 days, the left-handed opener from Bihar became India’s youngest international cricketer, surpassing the previous record held by Shafali Verma. His debut comes after a sensational breakthrough season that established him as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket.
Sooryavanshi earned national selection following an extraordinary Indian Premier League campaign for the Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs in 16 matches, including a century and five half-centuries. His fearless batting and explosive strokeplay made him one of the standout performers of the tournament.
The young batter also rewrote record books by surpassing Chris Gayle’s mark for the most sixes in a single IPL season, showcasing his exceptional power-hitting ability and match-winning potential.
His dominance throughout the tournament earned him unprecedented recognition, as he became the first player in IPL history to win both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Emerging Player awards in the same season.
Explaining the decision to include the teenager in the national squad, India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar praised Sooryavanshi’s maturity and impact under pressure. Agarkar noted that the youngster almost carried Rajasthan Royals single-handedly during the latter stages of the IPL and described him as a genuine game-changer.
“We’ve seen what he can do. Towards the playoffs, he almost carried Rajasthan Royals on his own. To perform consistently in such a competitive and high-pressure tournament shows his quality. He is a game-changer, and we have high hopes for him. His performances made the selection decision easy,” Agarkar had said while announcing the squad.
With his international debut now complete, Sooryavanshi begins the next phase of an already extraordinary cricketing journey. Indian cricket fans will be watching closely to see whether the teenage prodigy can replicate his domestic and franchise success on the international stage and fulfil the immense promise he has shown at such a young age.
