New Delhi: Tension prevailed at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Monday as protesters attempting to march towards Parliament under the banner of ‘Chalo Sansad’ clashed with police while demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak.
A large number of students and protesters gathered at the demonstration site, prompting the Delhi Police to deploy heavy security and install multiple layers of barricades across the New Delhi district to prevent the march from proceeding towards Parliament.
Visuals from the protest showed hundreds of demonstrators carrying flags and raising slogans against the Central government. As protesters attempted to cross the barricades, police personnel stopped them, leading to heated confrontations at several locations.
According to reports, police used force to disperse demonstrators trying to breach security barricades, and a lathi charge was also reported during the clashes. Riot control vehicles and a large contingent of security personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
Several students reportedly reached Jantar Mantar after assembling near Mandi House Metro Station before marching towards the protest venue. The demonstration intensified as more participants joined the gathering.
Authorities imposed strict security measures in the area, with Patel Chowk Metro Station reportedly closed as a precaution. Police also deployed signal jammers around the protest site, with some protesters alleging disruptions to mobile phone connectivity.
The protest at Jantar Mantar has been continuing for more than a month, with demonstrators demanding accountability over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and seeking the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Security remained heightened across central Delhi as police maintained a tight vigil to prevent protesters from entering restricted areas near Parliament.
