New Jersey: Spain midfielder Mikel Merino has described containing Lionel Messi as a “huge challenge” as Spain prepare for their reported FIFA World Cup final clash against defending champions Argentina.
Speaking at Spain’s training base in East Hanover, New Jersey, Merino said facing Messi and Argentina would be one of the biggest tests of his career.
“It’s a huge challenge and an incredible motivation for me and the whole team. Playing against a side like Argentina, which has already won this trophy, makes the match even more significant,” Merino said.
According to the report, Argentina captain Lionel Messi has played a decisive role in guiding his team to the final, contributing goals and assists throughout the tournament, including a standout performance in the semifinal against England.
Merino has also emerged as one of Spain’s key impact players, scoring crucial late winners after coming off the bench during the knockout stages.
Expressing confidence in his role, the Arsenal midfielder said he always believes he can make a difference whenever called upon.
“I have incredible confidence in myself and my abilities. But it doesn’t matter who the hero is; what matters is that the team wins. When you win a title, it belongs to everyone, not just the starting eleven,” he said.
Merino also praised teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, describing the 19-year-old as an “impressive” talent. The report notes that the final would mark Yamal’s first competitive meeting with Messi, symbolising a clash between one of football’s greatest icons and one of its brightest young stars.
Looking ahead to the match, Merino predicted a physically demanding contest and said discipline would be crucial.
“It will be an intense match. The faster we move the ball, the less time the opposition has to commit fouls,” he said, adding that effective refereeing would be important in controlling the game’s intensity.
Merino also reflected on Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning generation, saying those players inspired him as a child and expressing pride at the opportunity to inspire a new generation of Spanish football fans.
