Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, the Odisha Crime Branch’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID-CB) has successfully solved a blind murder case in Mayurbhanj district using advanced DNA profiling techniques, leading to the identification of the victim and the arrest of two accused persons. A juvenile has also been apprehended in connection with the crime.
The case pertains to CID-CB Police Station Case No. 02 of 2024, which originated from Udala Police Station Case No. 351 dated November 8, 2023, registered under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to Crime Branch officials, the investigation began after the body of an unidentified man was recovered from an abandoned well in a remote area under the jurisdiction of Udala police station. Since the body had remained submerged in water for a considerable period and was in an advanced stage of decomposition, investigators were unable to establish the victim’s identity through conventional methods.
After taking over the case, the CID-CB launched a detailed investigation using scientific and forensic techniques. Investigators prepared a database of missing persons matching the victim’s profile and narrowed the search to two potential identities. Blood samples were then collected from the family members of the missing individuals and sent for DNA examination.
The DNA profiling results ultimately helped investigators confirm the identity of the deceased, providing a crucial lead in the case. Based on further technical and field investigation, the Crime Branch identified those allegedly involved in the murder and subsequently arrested two accused persons. A juvenile suspected of involvement in the crime was also apprehended.
Officials described the case as a significant example of how modern forensic science and DNA technology can assist law enforcement agencies in solving complex criminal cases where traditional investigative methods face limitations.
The investigation also highlighted the growing role of scientific evidence in strengthening criminal investigations and ensuring justice in cases involving unidentified victims.
Further investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the murder is continuing, the Crime Branch said.
